CIEL welcomes the adoption of the binding agreement on access rights (to information, participation, and justice) in environmental decision making

The Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) expresses support for the adoption of a binding regional agreement between most Latin American and Caribbean countries focused on access rights to information, participation, and justice in environmental decision-making.

• The binding agreement on access rights to information, participation, and justice in environmental decision making was adopted by the majority of Latin American and Caribbean countries to promote environmental democracy and codify Principle 10 of the 1992 Rio Declaration.
• CIEL urges countries to quickly ratify the legal instrument, noting that its text was developed over four years of collaboration to address the increasing number of conflicts related to environmental decision-making in the region and the rising threats against environmental defenders.
