Environmental Impact Assessments in Practice: Potential Lessons for Human Rights Impact Assessments

This research paper examines the application and components of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), analyzing their role in public engagement and decision-making to determine how these lessons can be applied to Human Rights Impact Assessments (HRIAs).

• Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) have functioned as tools for social and environmental improvement for more than 40 years. These practices are capable of improving the environmental and social consequences of development, enhancing trans-boundary cooperation, producing information that aids decision-making, and fostering democratic practices and public engagement.
• The paper analyzes the spheres of application for EIA and investigates specific areas including the consequences of missing critical EIA components, the role of public participation, the political dimensions of the process, and the potential for applying these lessons to Human Rights Impact Assessments (HRIAs).
