T for Toxic: Seven things everyone should know about the EU-US trade negotiations (aka TTIP or TaFTA) and chemical regulation

This report by the Center for International Environmental Law argues that trade negotiations between the European Union and the United States (TTIP or TaFTA) threaten to undermine chemical safety regulations by weakening the EU's stronger policies and hindering improvements to the US federal system.

• The United States federal chemical management system is characterized as weak, with less than 2% of chemicals on the market tested for carcinogenicity and laws that restrict government authorities from preventing hazardous chemicals from entering food, water, and homes.
• Public health impacts resulting from toxic chemicals in the US—including cancer, asthma, obesity, and diabetes—are estimated to cost the public, businesses, and governments hundreds of billions of dollars, costs which are primarily borne by individuals and public resources rather than chemical manufacturers.
• While the European Union has implemented stronger chemical policies that have been emulated by some US states and trading partners, current trade negotiations between the EU and US risk stalling this progress by weakening the EU system and preventing US system improvements.
