Bradnee Chambers (1966-2019)

A statement from the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) commemorating the life and career of Bradnee Chambers (1966-2019), a Canadian diplomat and environmental leader within the United Nations system.

• Bradnee Chambers held several leadership roles within the United Nations, including serving as the Executive Secretary of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals and heading the Law and Governance Branch of UNEP’s Division for Environmental Law and Conventions. He also led the UNEP Secretariat in the Helsinki-Nairobi Ministerial Process, which contributed to the strengthening of UNEP at the Rio +20 Conference in 2002.
• Chambers contributed to various biodiversity and governance projects, including the Global Environmental Outlook 4 and the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. In collaboration with CIEL, he initiated the creation of the UNEP Compendium on Human Rights and the Environment and the database of multilateral environmental agreements and decisions known as Informea.org.
