CIEL statement on US AGs announcement of Climate Action Coalition and investigation into fossil fuel companies

A statement by CIEL President Carroll Muffett regarding the announcement of a Climate Action Coalition by US Attorneys General and their investigations into fossil fuel companies, specifically Exxon, for climate deception and fraud.

• CIEL asserts that the decision by a critical mass of US states to cooperate on climate-related investigations indicates that evidence of climate deception by Exxon and other companies is serious enough to warrant the use of terms such as "fraud", "deception", and "misinformation".
• CIEL argues that because fossil fuel companies conducted misinformation campaigns and operations across the entire country, state Attorneys General can more effectively uncover the "complex web of climate deception" by pooling resources and jurisdictional reach rather than acting individually.
• As of March 29, 2016, five state Attorneys General have confirmed investigations into the #ExxonKnew matter: New York, California, Maryland, Massachusetts, and the US Virgin Islands.
