Outcome of COP22: Momentum holds, but climate action ambition and finance must urgently be ratcheted up

A statement by the Center for International Environmental Law regarding the outcomes of COP22, noting that while momentum for the Paris Agreement remains, progress was slow and current ambitions are insufficient to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees.

• The 47 countries belonging to the climate vulnerable forum (CVF) committed to transitioning to 100% renewable energy by 2030 or 2050 at the latest, with the expectation that historic polluters provide the necessary funding to support this goal.
• Despite the desire for the Paris Agreement to succeed, progress at COP22 was slow, leaving global ambition and commitments too low to maintain global warming below 1.5 degrees.
• The conference saw progress in integrating gender equality, recognizing traditional and indigenous knowledge in Paris Agreement implementation, and emphasizing the capacity of developing countries to incorporate human rights into climate responses.
