Carroll Muffett of the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) argues that industry proposals for stricter data protection and confidential business information (CBI) standards within the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations would hinder public health, consumer safety, and environmental protections by limiting access to critical information.

• Industry proposals within the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations to increase standards for confidential business information and data protection would restrict access to information, which would negatively impact the environment, consumer safety, and public health.
• Access to information regarding chemical exposures and hazards is necessary for three groups: inventors to create safer solutions, consumers and downstream users to select safer products (which encourages innovation), and regulators to limit hazardous chemicals and allow safer alternatives to enter the market.
• Businesses are specifically concerned with the protection of data and confidential business information (CBI).
