Statement on UNEP Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals Reports

The Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) expresses support for three UN Environment Programme (UNEP) reports published in 2018 regarding endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), emphasizing the need for these findings to be translated into effective regulatory policies.

• The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) released three reports providing a 2017 overview of worldwide initiatives to identify endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), scientific knowledge regarding their lifecycles and environmental effects, and existing regulatory frameworks.
• EDCs, including parabens, bisphenols, and phthalates, are found in numerous daily products such as textiles, pesticides, packaging, and personal care products. They are linked to adverse health effects including diabetes, obesity, cancer, and reproductive disorders like reduced sperm count and infertility.
• Despite over 1,000 chemicals being identified as EDCs or potential EDCs, there is a deficiency in regulatory frameworks that explicitly address them, particularly within developing countries.
