The time is now: Latin American and Caribbean countries must seize the opportunity and bring the Escazú Agreement into force

• The Escazú Agreement is a legally binding regional agreement for Latin America and the Caribbean that codifies "access rights" based on Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration. It focuses on three pillars: the right to access information, participation in decision-making, and access to justice, with the goal of improving environmental governance and reducing conflicts between states and citizens.
• The Escazú Agreement is the first legally binding instrument to recognize the necessity for States to protect environmental and human rights defenders. It specifies that countries must ensure defenders can operate without fear of retaliation by implementing measures to prevent, investigate, and punish attacks.
