This report by the Center for International Environmental Law argues that trade negotiations between the European Union and the United States (TTIP or TAFTA) threaten to undermine public health protections by hindering the regulation of toxic chemicals.

• The public, authorities, and companies bear the financial burden of public health impacts caused by toxic chemicals—including cancer, asthma, obesity, diabetes, and pregnancy issues—which are estimated to cost hundreds of billions of euros annually.
• The European Union has implemented firmer chemical management policies than the United States, though the European Commission is moving slowly to block hundreds of products with unquestionable risk data from entering food, water, and homes.
• The United States government and chemical industry have claimed that EU regulations protecting public health and the environment act as trade barriers; consequently, trade negotiations between the EU and US risk stalling progress and weakening the European regulatory system.
