T for Toxic: Seven things everyone should know about the EU-US trade negotiations (aka TTIP or TAFTA) and chemical regulation

This report by the Center for International Environmental Law argues that EU-US trade negotiations threaten to undermine the European Union's stronger chemical regulation policies and hinder improvements to the flawed US federal chemical management system.

• Public health impacts from toxic chemicals, including cancer, asthma, obesity, diabetes, and reproductive issues, are estimated to cost governments, businesses, and the public hundreds of billions of Euros annually, costs that are primarily borne by public resources and individuals rather than chemical manufacturers.
• The US government and chemical industry have characterized the European Union's stricter public health and environmental regulations as trade barriers. Some policymakers use speculative trade impact assessments to justify not protecting women and children from endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs).
• While the EU has adopted policies to identify and reduce the use of hazardous industrial chemicals, the European Commission's pace of implementation is slow. Trade negotiations with the United States risk stalling this progress by weakening the EU system and preventing the US system from improving.
