CIEL Statement on the 8th Conference of the Parties (COP) of the Stockholm Convention

A statement by the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) criticizing the European Union for introducing loopholes into the Stockholm Convention's ban on DecaBDE and proposing similar exemptions for endocrine disrupting chemicals in the EU.

• At the 8th Conference of the Parties (COP) of the Stockholm Convention in Geneva, the EU supported blanket exemptions to the ban on DecaBDE, a persistent, bioaccumulative, and endocrine disrupting flame retardant, contrary to the advice of the Convention's scientific committee. These exemptions allow the use of DecaBDE in new cars and spare parts for nearly 20 years, and in aircraft for longer, with manufacturing potentially continuing until 2050 and use until 2100. The EU pushed for these exemptions on behalf of the aerospace industry, despite Boeing stating the exemption was unnecessary.
• The EU Commission is applying a similar strategy regarding endocrine disrupting chemicals in Brussels. Proposed criteria for identifying these disruptors include an exemption that would leave certain pesticides and biocides designed to interfere with hormone systems unregulated, which CIEL argues undermines the scientific criteria intended to protect EU citizens.
