CIEL Statement on the 8th Conference of the Parties (COP) of the Stockholm Convention

The Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) argues that the EU is undermining environmental and health protections by securing long-term exemptions for the use of the toxic flame retardant DecaBDE in the automotive and aerospace sectors, and by proposing similar loopholes for biocides and pesticides in its endocrine disruptor criteria.

• At the 8th COP of the Stockholm Convention, the EU supported blanket exemptions to the ban on DecaBDE, a persistent and endocrine disrupting flame retardant, contrary to the advice of the Convention's scientific committee. These exemptions allow the use of DecaBDE in new cars and spare parts for nearly 20 years, and in aircraft, where manufacturing may continue until 2050 and use until 2100.
• The EU Commission is applying a similar strategy regarding endocrine disrupting chemicals in Brussels, proposing criteria that include an exemption allowing certain pesticides and biocides designed to interfere with hormone systems to remain unregulated.
