Watchdogs Enter Final Round to Defend World Bank Safeguards

The Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) is participating in a final series of consultations with the World Bank to advocate for stronger, enforceable standards and safeguards in the Bank's project loan policies to protect people and the environment.

• CIEL has been involved in a reform process since 2012 aimed at improving the World Bank's policies to ensure they include clear and enforceable standards that comply with international law for the protection of communities and the environment.
• The World Bank's consultation process has spanned 30 countries, including a three-day meeting in Washington, DC, and a final scheduled consultation in Brazil in early March, with the official consultation period closing on March 15th.
• CIEL has collaborated with the US Treasury Department to advocate for open, inclusive, and meaningful participation in the consultation process regarding the rules governing World Bank project loans.
