CIEL Statement on IACHR Precautionary Measures regarding defender in Nicaragua

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has requested that Nicaragua implement precautionary measures to protect Olman Salazar Umanor, a member of the National Environmental Movement Against Industrial Mining (MONAFMI) and Coordinator of the Santa Cruz de la India Community Movement, and his nuclear family due to serious risks to their life and personal integrity. The Commission condemned the increasing harassment of human rights defenders and government opponents in Nicaragua and demanded that the state initiate an investigation into the situation and report back on the implementation of protective measures within 15 days.

• The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights determined that Olman Salazar Umanor and his nuclear family face serious and urgent risks to their rights to life and personal integrity due to his work as an environmental defender.
