CIEL Statement on IACHR Precautionary Measures regarding defender in Nicaragua

The Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) issued a statement acknowledging the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights' (IACHR) request for the State of Nicaragua to adopt Precautionary Measures to protect environmental defender Olman Salazar Umanor and his nuclear family.

• The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) determined that Olman Salazar Umanor, a member of the National Environmental Movement Against Industrial Mining (MONAFMI) and Coordinator of the Santa Cruz de la India Community Movement, faces a serious and urgent risk to his rights to life and personal integrity, a risk that also extends to his nuclear family.
• The IACHR has requested that the State of Nicaragua implement precautionary measures to protect Olman Salazar Umanor and his family from both state actors and third parties, with the specific requirement that the measures be agreed upon in consultation with the beneficiaries.
• The IACHR has called for the State of Nicaragua to launch an investigation into the situation to prevent recurrence and has set a 15-day deadline for the government to provide information on the implementation of the requested measures.
• The Commission has expressed condemnation regarding the rise of harassment in Nicaragua targeting human rights defenders, individuals opposing the Government, victims of human rights violations, and their families.
