• The EU currently relies on imports for 66% of its high-protein feed, creating vulnerabilities to supply chain disruptions and price fluctuations. Increasing plant-protein production for direct human consumption is proposed to reduce conversion losses by more than 75%.
• Current EU diets are significantly misaligned with health guidelines, with 80% of Europeans failing to consume sufficient amounts of legumes, wholegrains, fruits, and vegetables. This underconsumption is linked to 130,000 avoidable deaths and hidden economic costs of nearly €900 billion annually.
• Transitioning to healthier, plant-based diets could significantly reduce public spending; the economic costs of animal-based food production and consumption in the EU were €3 trillion in 2022, and a shift could save 43% of these externalities, totaling €1.3 trillion annually.
