• The proposed mining targets several heavy minerals, specifically ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile, zircon, monazite, garnet, and staurolite, across various farms in the Magisterial District of Vanrhynsdorp.
• Four appeals were lodged between 26 June 2019 and 10 July 2019 by the Centre for Environmental Rights (CER), North Westem Cape Mining Forum, Raakvat Boerdery (Edms) Bpk, and Merle Sowman.
• The grounds for the appeals included concerns over terrestrial biodiversity, the adequacy of rehabilitation and re-vegetation, the need for biodiversity offsets, the accuracy of maps, and the failure to promote ownership for Historically Disadvantaged Persons (HDPs).
• The recommendation to the Minister was to dismiss the appeals from the first, second, and fourth appellants and uphold the appeal of the third appellant (excluding the ground on map accuracy), thereby varying the IEA granted on 7 June 2019.
