Mineral Sands Resources (Pty) Ltd has applied for consent under section 102 of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) to expand the mining area of the Tormin Mine in the Western Cape. The request includes adding the 'Northern 10 Beaches', an inland 'Strand' line area, and infrastructure for a Mineral Separation Plant.

• Mineral Sands Resources (Pty) Ltd is seeking to expand the Tormin Mine's mining area to include approximately 43.7ha of the 'Northern 10 Beaches' located between the high and low water marks, and a 75.0ha 'Strand' line area on farm Geelwal Karoo 262.
• The application includes a proposed disturbance footprint of 29.2ha for a Mineral Separation Plant (MSP) and associated infrastructure, such as a Reverse Osmosis (RO) Plant, on farm Geelwal Karoo 262, as well as 2.1ha for northern beach access roads.
• The Tormin Mine has a defined resource of at least 15.4 million tonnes of total resource, with an average valuable heavy mineral (VHM) content of 25% across the northern beaches, existing beaches, and inland strand.
• Resource replenishment on the beaches is described as erratic and influenced by time and sea storm events; while some areas show a 34% increase in zircon concentration, others may only see 35% replenishment, with a long-term trend toward lower grades.
• The Tormin Mine has invested over ZAR 600 million in capital and has contributed R441 million annually to the South African economy since commencing operations in 2014.
• Over the last three years, the mine has contributed more than ZAR 14.2 million toward its Social and Labour Plan (SLP), which includes human resources development and local economic development projects within the Matzikama Municipality.
• The mining right (WC30/5/1/2/2/162MR) allows for the extraction of several minerals, including Zircon (Gemstone), Ilmenite, Garnet, Leucoxene, Rutile, Magnetite, and general Heavy Minerals.
