URGENT REQUEST FOR PROVISION OF WATER TANKS, RELIABLE WATER SUPPLY, AND SANITATION PACKS TO COMMUNITIES WITHOUT ACCESS TO WATER

The South African Water Caucus (SAWC) is demanding urgent government intervention to provide water and sanitation to over 200 communities across South Africa. • In Mpumalanga, women in the Iraq informal settlement (Phola/Ogies) have been forced to collect water under cover of darkness to avoid police harassment during lockdown restrictions.
• Sanitation failures are highlighted in Gauteng, specifically in the Tjovitjo Informal Settlement where portable toilets have not been sanitized since the start of lockdown, with approximately five families sharing one toilet.
• The SAWC expresses concern that investigations into corruption and maladministration within the Department of Water and Sanitation may be hindering the Water Command Centre's ability to distribute resources.
