NOTICE IN TERMS OF SECTION 50(4) OF THE NATIONAL FORESTS ACT, 1998 (ACT NO. 84 OF 1998)

A 2007 government notice issued by the Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry regarding the release of specific State forest land areas in KwaZulu-Natal, which are no longer required for forestry, for allocation to the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism to establish the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park.

• Effective 1 April 2007, the Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry released State forest land within the Umkhanyakude District Council area of KwaZulu-Natal for allocation to the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism for the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park.
• The release includes several specific State Forests with varying extents: Sodwana State Forest (56,242.6510 ha), Eastern Shores State Forest (12,873.0000 ha), Cape Vidal State Forest (11,313.0000 ha), Nyalazi State Forest (9,626.9218 ha), Dukuduku State Forest (4,809.1651 ha), and Umfolozi State Forest (3,858.7160 ha).
• Certain areas are explicitly excluded from the release, including approximately 6,784 hectares in Dukuduku State Forest and 7,984 hectares in Nyalazi State Forest leased to Siyaqhubeka Forestry (Propriety) Limited for 35 years.
• Other exclusions from the released land include the 'Futululu Forest Research Station' and its surrounding land (approximately 275.01 hectares), as well as unsurveyed State land south of the Mtubatuba-St Lucia road (approximately 10,125 hectares).
