This document is a Pollution Prevention Plan (PPP) Progress Report submitted by ArcelorMittal South Africa Limited (AMSA) to the South African Minister of Environmental Affairs on 29 March 2019. • The company reported mixed results across specific mitigation projects: the utilization of process gas for power generation was highly successful, while VSD installations slightly underperformed, partly due to a lower ESKOM emission factor (0.9491 vs 1.01 tCO2/MWh).
• AMSA failed to achieve its planned natural gas consumption reduction in 2018, attributing this to increased liquid steel production resulting from higher capacity utilization.
• The project for "CO Recovery from Waste Gas Streams" is behind schedule. Consequently, AMSA states that the projected emission reductions for this specific measure will not be achieved for the years 2019 and 2020.
• AMSA raised concerns via BUSA regarding the Technical Guideline document accompanying the GHG Reporting Regulations, stating it was not finalized to accommodate all process configurations, boundaries, and practices found within AMSA's operations.
