The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Acid Mine Drainage

Civil society organisations are urging the South African government to release a suppressed report by a Team of Experts (TOE) regarding acid mine drainage. They argue that the continued non-disclosure of this report undermines transparency and prevents the public from assessing the urgency of pollution affecting the Vaal and Crocodile River systems.

• The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Acid Mine Drainage (IMC) has failed to release the Team of Experts' (TOE) report containing findings and recommendations for managing acid mine drainage, despite repeated requests and an application under the Promotion of Access to Information Act, 2000.
• The non-disclosure of the TOE report is viewed as a violation of the principles of democracy, access to information, and transparency established in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996.
