A letter from the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) to the Centre for Environmental Rights providing status updates on license applications for the Thabametsi and Khanyisa coal-fired power stations.

• The license application for the Thabametsi project remains on hold pending the finalization of the Environmental Authorisation appeal process and the granting of an Environmental Authorisation; consequently, NERSA cannot provide a date for the public hearing.
• NERSA cannot proceed with the Khanyisa application because the Water Use Licence (WUL) has not been finalised, as confirmed by the applicant on 11 September 2017. NERSA is unable to set a public hearing date and stated it will abide by the decision of the court regarding judicial review proceedings for the project, provided there is evidence the matter is before the courts.
• NERSA stated it has no license applications from other proposed coal-fired generation facilities mentioned by the Centre for Environmental Rights, including KiPower, and therefore cannot comment on them.
