The South African Department of Environmental Affairs granted Eskom postponements for compliance with minimum emission standards at the Matla Power Station. For units 1-4, PM limits are set at 200mg/Nm3 until March 2020, while units 5-6 must maintain 100mg/Nm3. NOx compliance is postponed until March 2020 with a 1200mg/Nm3 limit, and SO2 compliance for new plant is postponed until March 2025 with a 2600mg/Nm3 limit. Eskom must also provide a PM pollution offset plan by 31 March 2016.

• The National Air Quality Officer granted a postponement of compliance with minimum emission standards for existing plant at Matla Power Station for units 1-4 from 01 April 2015 to 31 March 2020, setting a particulate matter (PM) limit of 200mg/Nm3. Units 5-6 are required to maintain compliance of 100mg/Nm3.
• A postponement of compliance with the minimum emission standard for new plant is granted from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2025 for sulphur dioxide (SO2), with a limit of 2600mg/Nm3 based on the sulphur content of the fuel.
• Compliance with minimum emission standards for nitrogen oxides (NOx) for existing plant is postponed from 01 April 2015 to 31 March 2020, with a limit of 1200mg/Nm3. Additionally, Eskom is required to implement an offset programme to reduce PM pollution in the ambient/receiving environment, with an implementation plan due by 31 March 2016.
