A letter from the South African Department of Environmental Affairs to Eskom granting a postponement of compliance time-frames for minimum emission standards at the Kriel Power Station.

• The National Air Quality Officer granted a postponement of compliance with minimum emission standards for particulate matter (PM) at Kriel Power Station from 01 April 2015 to 31 March 2020, setting a limit of 125mg/Nm3 for this period based on the finding that the facility operates at this level if proper maintenance is performed.
• A postponement for NOx emission standards for existing plant was granted from 01 April 2015 to 31 March 2020 with a limit of 1600mg/Nm3. Additionally, a postponement for new plant standards was granted from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2025 with a limit of 2800mg/Nm3.
• Kriel Power Station is scheduled for decommissioning between 2030 and 2034, based on a 50 year life span. Eskom is required to provide a definite offset implementation plan to reduce PM pollution in the ambient/receiving environment by 31 March 2016.
