The Department of Environmental Affairs of South Africa has granted an integrated environmental authorisation to Anglo Operations Limited for the construction of the 450MW Khanyisa Coal-fired Power Station in Emalahleni, Mpumalanga Province. The authorisation covers the design, construction, commissioning, operation, and decommissioning of the plant, which will use fluidised bed technologies and discard coal for power generation.

• The Department of Environmental Affairs granted an integrated environmental authorisation to Anglo Operations Limited for the construction of the 450MW Khanyisa Coal-fired Power Station and associated infrastructure in Emalahleni, Mpumalanga Province.
• The power station will utilize discard coal for power generation and will use reclaimed and treated mine water sourced from the Emalahleni Waste Water Treatment Works.
• The project is expected to employ approximately 1,200 people during the peak construction period (lasting six to eight months), approximately 900 people during the general construction period, and approximately 120 people during the operational phase.
• The authorised activities must commence within five years from the date of issue, otherwise the environmental authorisation will lapse and a new application must be submitted.
• The authorisation requires the appointment of an independent Environmental Control Officer (ECO) for the construction phase and a Waste Management Control Officer (WMCO) to monitor compliance with the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (NEMWA).
• The project scope includes several infrastructure components: coal silos and sorbent stock yards; conveyors for coal, ash, sorbent, and gypsum; a high voltage (HV) yard; water and wastewater treatment facilities; ash and spent sorbent disposal systems; and various administrative and service buildings.
