The Department of Environmental Affairs of the Republic of South Africa has granted an integrated environmental authorisation to Newshelf 1282 (Pty) Ltd for the establishment of the 1200MW coal-fired IPP Thabametsi Power Station and associated infrastructure near Lephalale in the Limpopo Province.

• The Department of Environmental Affairs has authorised Newshelf 1282 (Pty) Ltd to construct a coal-fired power station with a generating capacity of up to 1200MW, including associated infrastructure such as coal storage areas, ash dumps, wastewater treatment facilities, and a High Voltage Yard.
• The project's development footprint is approximately 650 hectares and is located in the Waterberg Coal Fields, about 26 km northwest of Lephalale within the Lephalale Local Municipality of the Limpopo Province.
• The authorisation includes several specific listed activities under NEMA and NEMWA, including the construction of two coal stockpiles requiring an air emissions license, a water supply pipeline, a 400kV HV yard and power lines, and the disposal of hazardous ash to land via an ash dump.
• The authorisation is subject to strict waste management and environmental controls, requiring the appointment of an independent Environmental Control Officer (ECO) for the construction phase and a Waste Management Control Officer (WMCO) to monitor compliance with NEMWA.
• The holder must implement a water quality monitoring network consisting of at least six monitoring boreholes located upstream and downstream of the ash dump, coal stockpile, pollution control dams, and Daarby Faults.
• The authorisation stipulates that activities must commence within three years from the date of issue, or the authorisation will lapse. Additionally, the holder must obtain a Water Use Licence from the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) before impacting any wetland or water resource.
