- Ambient air pollution is a significant risk for children, particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean and Western Pacific regions. In low-income countries, 98% of large cities exceed WHO guideline levels for PM2.5.
- Second-hand tobacco smoke (SHTS) and third-hand smoke (chemicals settling on surfaces) pose severe risks to children, including increased rates of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), reduced lung function, and congenital malformations.
- Ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure during childhood is a strong risk factor for malignant melanoma and cataracts. The report highlights the 'SunSmart' program in Victoria, Australia, as a successful model for primary prevention in schools.
- Significant progress has been made in reducing certain environmental hazards since 1990, including halving child mortality (from 12.7 million in 1990 to 5.9 million in 2015) and nearly eliminating lead in petrol globally.
