The South African Department of Environmental Affairs granted Eskom postponements for compliance with minimum emission standards for particulate matter, sulphur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides at the Grootvlei Power Station. The decision includes a phased reduction for PM until 2020 and extended limits for SO2 and NOx until 2025, coinciding with the station's scheduled decommissioning between 2025 and 2028. • The National Air Quality Officer granted a phased postponement for compliance with minimum emission standards for particulate matter (PM) for existing plant at Grootvlei Power Station. The limits are set at 350mg/Nm3 from 01 April 2015 to 31 December 2016, 200mg/Nm3 from 01 January 2017 to 31 March 2018, and 100mg/Nm3 from 01 April 2018 to 31 March 2020.
• Postponement of compliance with minimum emission standards for new plant is granted from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2025 for both sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). The limit for SO2 is 3500mg/Nm3, based on fuel sulphur content, and the limit for NOx is 1100mg/Nm3.
• Grootvlei Power Station is scheduled for decommissioning between 2025 and 2028, based on a 50-year life span.
• Eskom is required to implement an offset programme to reduce particulate matter (PM) pollution in the ambient or receiving environment, with a definite implementation plan due by 31 March 2016.
