DIVISION OF THE REPUBLIC INTO REGIONS FOR THE PURPOSES OF THE MINERAL AND PETROLEUM RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT ACT, 2002 (ACT NO. 28 OF 2002)

This government notice, published on 30 April 2004 by the Minister of Minerals and Energy, defines the regional divisions of South Africa and its adjacent sea for the purposes of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, 2002.

• The Minister of Minerals and Energy divided the Republic of South Africa and its adjacent sea into nine regions based on provincial boundaries as described in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1993 and 1996. These regions are the Western Cape, Northern Cape, Free State, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Gauteng, and North-West.
• The notice specifies the seaward boundaries for coastal regions, including the international boundaries with Namibia to the north of the Northern Cape Region and with Mozambique to the north of the KwaZulu-Natal Region. Internal seaward boundaries between the Northern Cape and Western Cape are determined by the Department of Minerals and Energy on the latitude line 31°12'53".
• Specific land adjustments were made to the regional boundaries: a list of farms in the Magisterial District of Potchefstroom (Registration Division IQ) are included in the Gauteng Region instead of the North-West Region, and a list of farms in the Magisterial District of Viljoenskroon are included in the North-West Region instead of the Free State Region.
