INVITATION TO PRESENT ON THE SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS AND REMEDIATION OF A PROPOSED COAL MINING PROJECT NEAR WAKKERSTROOM

The Centre for Environmental Rights (CER) issued a letter to The Voice Community Representative Council declining an invitation to debate a proposed coal mine by Atha-Africa Ventures Pty Ltd, citing ongoing legal proceedings. Instead, CER invited The Voice to visit Emalahleni, Mpumalanga, to see the actual impacts of coal mining and meet with affected community organisations.

• The Centre for Environmental Rights (CER) and a coalition of eight non-profit organisations oppose a proposed coal mine by Atha-Africa Ventures Pty Ltd because the project is located within a strategic water source area and a declared protected area. They assert that coal mining in such areas threatens the water security of South Africa and that the resulting damage to water resources is impossible to mitigate.
• CER represents a coalition of eight public interest organisations focused on the protection of biodiversity, strategic water source areas,SSSSS and protected areas. These organisations include Earthlife Africa Johannesburg, the Mining and Environmental laS Environmental Justice Community Network of South Africa, BirdLife South Africa, the Endangered Wildlife Trust, Federation for a Sustainable Environment, groundWork, Association for Water and Rural Development (AWARD), and the BenchS Bench Marks Foundation.
• CER declined an invitation to presentSSSSSS to present on the impacts of the proposed mine because Atha-Africa Ventures Pty Ltd is a party to current legal proceedings laS proceedings in the High Court aimed at setting aside the mine's approvals, making a debate with the company inappropriate.
• CER and its partners have previously taken legal action, alongside the Mining Affected Communities United in Action (MACUA) and Women Affected by Mining United in Action (WAMUA), to compel the Minister of Mineral Resources to consult with mining-affected communities regarding changes to the Mining Charter,S rather than only negotiating with the Minerals Council of South Africa.
