TASK TEAM ON MINING IN SENSITIVE AREAS: SUPPORT FROM NON-GOVERNMENT AND CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATIONS

The Centre for Environmental Rights and a coalition of environmental NGOs are urging the South African government to use legislative powers to prohibit mining in areas of critical biodiversity and hydrological value. They offer to provide scientific evidence and a list of sensitive areas to assist a government task team in improving environmental compliance and sustainable development in the mining sector.

• Environmental CSOs in South Africa are concerned that prospecting and mining rights are being granted in areas of critical biodiversity and hydrological value, sometimes based on inaccurate information provided by applicants and consultants.
• The granting of mining rights in sensitive areas is viewed as a waste of resources for the Department of Mineral Resources, the Department of Environmental Affairs, provincial authorities, and CSOs, while potentially harming the wellbeing of present and future generations.
• The Centre for Environmental Rights and its partners intend to formally request that the Minister of Mineral Resources exercise discretion under section 49(1) of the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act, 2002 to prohibit mining and prospecting in specific geographical areas of critical sensitivity.
