Urgent follow-up: Clarity on the scope and extent of Ministers commitment to protection of Chrissiesmeer Biodiversity Site

The Centre for Environmental Rights is urging the Minister of Mineral Resources to clarify her intentions for the Chrissiesmeer Biodiversity Site and to formally prohibit prospecting and mining there for at least 20 years under the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, 2002.

• The Centre for Environmental Rights is seeking clarification on the Minister's commitment to protect the Chrissiesmeer Biodiversity Site, noting that a previous request from 13 March 2013 remained unanswered after two months.
• There is an urgent need for clarity because the Department of Mineral Resources has accepted a mining right application from Msobo Coal for an area inside the Chrissiesmeer Biodiversity Site, and public consultations are ongoing.
