THE INTER-MINISTERIAL COMMITTEE ON ACID MINE DRAINAGE: RELEASE OF HEAVILY POLLUTED, TOXIC ACID MINE DRAINAGE INTO OUR STREAMS AND RIVERS

The Centre for Environmental Rights, acting on behalf of a coalition of 34 non-government and civil society organisations, issued a letter to the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Acid Mine Drainage demanding a response to a previous inquiry and the publication of an expert team's report regarding the release of toxic acid mine drainage into watercourses.

• A coalition of 34 non-government and civil society organisations is seeking an urgent response from the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Acid Mine Drainage regarding a letter sent on 25 January 2011.
• The Centre for Environmental Rights, on behalf of the Federation for a Sustainable Environment, has requested the publication of a report from a team of experts under the Promotion of Access to Information Act, 2000, noting that a decision is required within 30 days of receipt.
• The coalition of organisations intends to explore legal remedies to prevent and mitigate the release of polluted acid mine water into watercourses if a satisfactory response from the IMC is not provided.
