THE INTER-MINISTERIAL COMMITTEE ON ACID MINE DRAINAGE: RELEASE OF HEAVILY POLLUTED, TOXIC ACID MINE DRAINAGE INTO OUR STREAMS AND RIVERS

The Centre for Environmental Rights is urging the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Acid Mine Drainage to respond to concerns raised by a coalition of 34 civil society organisations and to publish a report from a team of experts. The letter warns that legal action may be pursued if a satisfactory response is not provided to prevent the release of toxic acid mine drainage into watercourses.

• A coalition of 34 non-government and civil society organisations sent a letter to the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Acid Mine Drainage on 25 January 2011, but has not yet received a substantive reply.
• The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Acid Mine Drainage has undertaken to publish a report from a team of experts, which the authors argue must be released to reduce public anxiety and suspicion.
• A formal request for the expert report was submitted via the Promotion of Access to Information Act, 2000 on behalf of the Federation for a Sustainable Environment, requiring a decision within 30 days.
