REGULATIONS RELATING TO THE AERIAL APPLICATION OF AGRICULTURAL REMEDIES

The Regulations Relating to the Aerial Application of Agricultural Remedies, issued under the Hazardous Substances Act 15 of 1973, establish safety and reporting standards for the aircraft-based application of specific hazardous agricultural substances in South Africa.

• Aerial applications of agricultural remedies that are classified as Group II hazardous substances and listed in the SABS' Code of Practice 0228 must be conducted according to the SABS Code of Practice 0118, titled 'The aerial application of agricultural remedies'.
• Employers conducting or commissioning aerial applications must provide inspectors with specific details upon request, including the application firm's name and address, the date of application, the remedy's trade name or active ingredient, quantity and application rate, supplier details, employee names and addresses, and the protective clothing used.
• Employers are required to ensure that any employee who has been at risk of exposure to an agricultural remedy undergoes medical surveillance as defined by the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993.
