The Mpumalanga Province Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs has granted environmental authorisation to the International Company for Water and Power Projects to construct a bulk water supply pipeline. The pipeline will connect the eMalahleni Reclamation Plant with the Khanyisa Power Station.

• The International Company for Water and Power Projects is authorised to construct a 4.4km bulk water supply pipeline with an internal diameter of 0.36m. This pipeline will connect the eMalahleni Reclamation Plant with the Khanyisa Power Station on Portion 0 and Portion 3 of the farm Groenfontein 331 JS.
• The Department's decision to grant authorisation was based on the finding that the power station will help alleviate national and Eskom generation capacity shortages.
• The project site includes a permanent channeled valley bottom floodplain wetland that is described as 'Critically Modified' because it has been completely transformed.
• The authorisation is subject to several environmental conditions, including the requirement that the pipeline be constructed as close as possible to the existing conveyor belt and that an ecological walk-through be conducted during summer to identify plants of conservation importance for relocation.
• The applicant must appoint an independent Environmental Control Officer (ECO) before construction begins to monitor compliance with the authorisation and the approved Environmental Management Programme (EMPr) dated 11 February 2016.
• Construction activities are restricted to working hours between 07h00 and 17h00, and the developer must prioritise local labour for employment during the construction phase.
