This document is a draft written reply from the South African Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs to a question posed by Mr. D A Worth (DA-FS) in the National Council of Provinces regarding the construction of new dams in the Free State.

• The Department of Water and Environmental Affairs is not planning the construction of any new dams in the Free State. This is because most surface water in the region is already captured by existing dams, meaning new developments would not increase water yield and would instead divert water from current users.
