A draft reply from the South African Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs to a National Assembly question regarding actions taken to prevent raw sewage from entering rivers flowing into the Kruger National Park, including water quality sampling results and reports of animal mortality.

• The Department of Water and Environmental Affairs has taken various regulatory and financial actions against several municipalities to mitigate sewage flow into rivers. These include issuing directives in October 2009 to Nkomazi and Bushbuckridge municipalities, and in February 2010 to Emakhazeni and Greater Sekhukhune District municipalities. Criminal cases were opened with the Komatipoort South African Police Service (SAPS) for Nkomazi (still under investigation) and Bushbuckridge (which was nollied). Additionally, the Department provided R5.16 million to the Sabie Municipality to optimize wastewater treatment and refurbished the Bush Pump Stations and Clarinet 1, 2 and 3 through its Accelerated Infrastructure Programme.
• Water quality sampling for E. coli (standard 1000 cfu/100ml) from December 2010 to February 2011 showed varying levels of pollution. The Olifants River upstream of Riverview consistently recorded 2419 cfu/100ml across all three months. The Crocodile River at Komatipoort recorded nil in December 2010 and February 2011, but 2419 cfu/100ml in January 2011. Other points, such as the Sabie River at Kruger Gate, showed a decreasing trend from 866 in December to 67 in February.
• The Department states that no animals have died in the Kruger National Park due to faecal pollution since 22 July 2009. This conclusion is based on the absence of reports of pollution incidents that kill aquatic biota (such as fish kills) lodged with the Department's Regional Office in Mpumalanga, a finding the Department confirmed with the Kruger National Park.
