This document is a draft written reply from the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs to a National Assembly question (Question 44) posed by Mrs J F Terblanche (DA) regarding the status of the Hammarsdale sludge pond site.

• No further rehabilitation work has been conducted at the Hammarsdale sludge pond site because of budgetary constraints.
• The Department of Water and Environmental Affairs intended to appoint a contractor to complete a concrete palisade fence at the site by the end of April 2011, following the receipt of quotations.
• Water monitoring was last performed in March 2010, with results indicating that the sludge ponds were not impacting groundwater or surface water; the next monitoring round was scheduled for April 2011. Public access to these reports is available via the Department's Regional Office in KwaZulu-Natal.
