This document is a draft written reply from the South African Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs to a National Assembly question (No. 2458) posed by Mr G R Morgan (DA) regarding fish kills in the Vaal Dam during August 2011.

• The Department of Water and Environmental Affairs received no reports of fish kills within the Vaal Dam between 1 August 2011 and 25 August 2011, although a fish kill downstream of the dam wall was reported on 29 August 2011.
• An inspection conducted on 30 August 2011 and subsequent water sample analysis indicated that the water in the vicinity of the downstream fish kill was not polluted.
• A river health assessment study completed in November 2010 found that most fish kills in the Vaal River result from natural variations causing chronic stress through sustained lower oxygen concentrations.
