A draft reply from the South African Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs to a National Assembly question regarding the legislative origins and current status of the Vogel Vlei irrigation scheme.

• The Vogel Vlei Water Control Area, located near Gouda in the Western Cape, was established under the Irrigation and Conservation of Water Act, 1912 (Act 8 of 1912) and/or the Irrigation Amendment Act, 1934 (Act 46 of 1934). The area was first gazetted on 6 June 1947 via Proclamation number 131, and the associated government water work was completed in 1952.
• The scheme is currently named the Berg River (Voélvlei Dam) Government Water Scheme. It provides water for agricultural use to the Lower Berg River Irrigation Board, as well as domestic and industrial water to the City of Cape Town and other towns within the West Coast District Municipal area.
• The Lower Berg River Irrigation Board, established under the Water Act, 1956 (Act 54 of 1956), remains functional and is currently transitioning into a Water User Association.
