This document is a draft written reply from the South African Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs to a National Assembly question (No. 1490) posed by Mrs S V Kalyan (DA) regarding the functionality of the Lydenburg waste water treatment plant and the water quality of the Dorps River.

• A site inspection conducted on 29 March 2011 indicated that the Lydenburg waste water treatment plant was functioning, although some minor breakdowns were present in certain sections of the plant.
• The Department of Water and Environmental Affairs monitors the quality of the Dorps River. Monitoring data for Ortho phosphate and E. coli from October 2010 to March 2011 shows varying levels upstream and downstream of the sewage works, with downstream Ortho phosphate levels reaching 52 mg/l in March 2011.
• The Lydenburg wastewater treatment plant's assessment results were scheduled for inclusion in the July 2011 Green Drop Report.
• Since 20 May 2010, no directives or notices have been issued and no criminal charges have been laid against the municipality. This is attributed to the municipality's positive response to prior notices with action plans and the fact that no criminal offences were established. However, a non-compliance letter was issued following a site visit.
• Full electrical power supply to the plant was restored on 31 March 2011 with assistance from ESKOM to ensure all plant sections functioned optimally.
