This document is a draft written reply from the South African Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs to a National Assembly question (Question 936) posed by Mr M J Ellis (DA) in March 2011. The reply addresses water quality reports and mitigation actions for several dams and river inflows in KwaZulu-Natal.

• The Department of Water and Environmental Affairs receives a monthly Water Quality and Environmental Report from Umgeni Water via its KwaZulu-Natal Regional Office. This report summarizes water resource monitoring and potable water quality audits, with data integrated into the electronic Blue Drop Water Quality Regulatory System.
• To address water quality in the EJ Smith Dam, the Department and Umgeni Water established the Mzimayi Catchment Management forum. This group, which includes the Ugu District Municipality, WESSA, and community representatives, focuses on improving the water quality of the Mzimayi River.
• The Department utilizes the Inanda Catchment Management Forum to manage water quality issues affecting the Inanda Dam. Participants include the Department of Mineral Resources, municipalities, Umgeni Water, WESSA, the Duzi-Umgeni Conservancy Trust, and community representatives.
• Regarding the Shongweni Dam, the Department completed a water quality status and preliminary resource quality objectives study on the Sterkspruit River to develop a long-term proactive strategy for the catchment.
• To improve the Mthinzima inflow into the Midmar Dam, the Department met with the Umgungundlovu District Municipality on 16 March 2011 to address problems in Mpophomeni. Recommended measures include the re-commissioning and upgrade of the Mpophomeni Wastewater Treatment Works, wetland rehabilitation via the Working for Wetlands Programme, and the provision of proper solid waste services.
