This document is a draft written reply from the South African Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs to a National Assembly question asked by Mr M J Ellis (DA) regarding sewage pollution and infrastructure maintenance in the Metsimaholo Local Municipality.

• A sewage leakage was reported at the Welgelegen Pump Station in Sasolburg on 17 January 2011. Following a joint site inspection by the Department and the Metsimaholo Local Municipality on 18 January 2011, the leakage was addressed.
• The Metsimaholo Local Municipality has engaged the Millennium Pump Company for regular maintenance of the Welgelegen Pump Station in Sasolburg, with the municipality reporting that 70% of the refurbishment work is complete.
• The Department of Water and Environmental Affairs issued a notice of intention to issue a directive to the Metsimaholo Local Municipality on 6 December 2010 due to non-compliance of local sewage treatment works. Despite the municipality's claim on 13 December 2010 that a contractor had been appointed, the Department later issued a directive for failure to maintain pump stations.
• A formal directive under section 19(3) of the National Water Act, 1998 (Act No. 36 of 1998) was issued against the Metsimaholo Local Municipality on 25 March 2011.
