This document is a draft written reply from the South African Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs to a National Assembly question (Question 793) posed by Mr. J.M. Ellies of the Democratic Alliance (DA). The inquiry concerned alleged mine water pollution in the Wilge River affecting the Ezemvelo Nature Reserve.

• The Department of Water and Environmental Affairs was not initially informed of the alleged pollution, but the Regional Office: Mpumalanga conducted an investigation on 14 March 2011 after learning of the allegations in early March.
• The investigation did not identify a source of pollution, as water samples did not show concentrations higher than the baseline levels in the Wilge River.
• Because no pollution was revealed in the river or the nature reserve, the Department issued no pre-notices, directives, or criminal charges, and has no rehabilitation plans for the affected areas.
