• The Department of Water and Environmental Affairs has implemented water demand management initiatives in Gauteng as part of the Vaal River System Reconciliation Strategy. This involved assessing potential savings from water conservation and demand management across all metropolitan and local municipalities, resulting in individual water savings targets—primarily focused on reducing water loss—that total 15% of overall municipal water use.
• The 15% water saving target is intended to maintain adequate water supplies until the Lesotho Highlands Phase 2, the next Vaal River System Water Augmentation Project, is implemented in 2020. While progress has been reported biannually by metropolitan municipalities and one of the largest municipalities, the government states that interventions must be intensified and funding prioritised by local government to avoid water shortages in the country's economic hub.
