• In the 'Die Hel' kloof south of Strandfontein, the author identified several archaeological shell middens. Site 2 featured a 10m x 3m shelter with a 50m talus surface containing molluscs (Patella granatina, P. argenvillei, Burnupena spp, and Choromytilus meridionalis), faunal remains from tortoises and bovids, Ostrich Eggshell (OES) fragments, a red silcrete adze, and an OES bead.
• An open archaeological site (Site 4) and a row of six historical graves were recorded south of Strandfontein. The graves, likely belonging to fishermen and possibly older than 60 years, are marked by beach boulders and Euphorbia bushes. The author noted that informal dirt roads in this area have caused damage and loss of cultural heritage by cutting into archaeological sites.
• The Van Rhijn Museum in Vanrhynsdorp serves as a significant local resource for geology, palaeontology, and Stone Age material (from Early to Later Stone Age). The author noted that a recent Environmental Management Programme Report for mining prospecting on farm Quaggaskop 215 dedicated only one page to archaeological and cultural resources.
• On farm Geelwal Karoo 262, the author identified a large archaeological campsite at Bakoond (approximately 100m x 50m) containing marine shells and activity areas for stone artefact manufacture. The site is characterized as a campsite rather than a processing site due to its location 40m above sea level and the presence of quartzite, quartz, and silcrete tools.
• Significant palaeontological resources were observed on farm Geelwal Karoo 262, including fossilized mangrove roots (approximately 10m wide) and fossilized tortoises with carapaces around 400mm in length. The author observed that dirt roads on Transhex property have severely damaged some of these unique fossil sites.
• Regarding the prospecting of heavy minerals on farm Geelwal Karoo 262, the author concludes that activities on the beach centerlines will not directly impact heritage sites. However, there is a high risk of impact if new roads are constructed; therefore, the author strongly recommends adhering to the decision to use only existing roads and tracks.
