Request to the Department of Environmental Affairs for information in relation to Section 30A (NEMA) applications made and directives issued in relation to borehole drilling

On 8 October 2018, the Centre for Environmental Rights requested records from the Department of Environmental Affairs concerning borehole drilling under section 30A of the National Environmental Management Act, 1998. The request seeks a list of all such directives, records of alternative site considerations, water use licences from the Department of Water and Sanitation, permissions for drilling in nature reserves, approved intervention plans, and Records of Decision for directives issued during the drought.

• The Centre for Environmental Rights requested several categories of records from the Department of Environmental Affairs regarding borehole drilling under section 30A of the National Environmental Management Act, 1998. These requests include a comprehensive list of all section 30A directives ever issued, documents regarding the consideration of alternative drilling sites, and final approved intervention plans.
• The information request specifically targets documentation related to water use licences and land permissions. This includes copies of applications to and licences issued by the Department of Water and Sanitation stemming from section 30A directives, as well as records of permission granted by land owners or management authorities for drilling within nature reserves.
• The request seeks the full Record of Decision for all section 30A directives that were issued during the period of the drought.
