Request to DEA for correspondence between the Atha-Africa Ventures (Pty) Ltd relating to the planned Yzermyn in the Mabola Protected Environment

The Centre for Environmental Rights (CER) submitted a request to the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) on 7 December 2016 for records concerning the proposed Yzermyn underground coal mine in the Mabola Protected Environment.

• The Centre for Environmental Rights (CER) requested several types of records from the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) and the Minister of Environmental Affairs regarding the proposed Yzermyn underground coal mine in Wakkerstroom, Mpumalanga Province. These requests include correspondence since May 2016 regarding consent to mine commercially in the Mabola Protected Environment under section 48(1)(b) of the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act 57 of 2003 (NEMPAA), internal memoranda, any decision made on the request, and the reasons for such a decision.
