Barricading the Doors: The Latest on our Work on Transparency in Environmental Governance in South Africa

The Centre for Environmental Rights (CER) reports on its efforts to use the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) to obtain environmental records from government and private entities in South Africa as of February 2013.

• The Centre for Environmental Rights (CER) utilizes the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) to seek environmental records from both government bodies and private companies for the benefit of civil society organisations and communities.
• While public bodies have shown some acknowledgement of their PAIA obligations, there has been a corresponding decline in the actual disclosure of records.
• Private companies have become more resistant to releasing environmental information, reaching a point where they oppose legal actions intended to force disclosure.
