The Guardian view on Cop27: this is no time for apathy or complacency

• Wealthy nations are failing to reduce emissions sufficiently and are instead reinvesting in oil and gas, despite the planet approaching a point of irreversible climate chaos.
• Current national promises represent only one fiftieth of the action required to maintain a temperature limit of 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, while extreme weather events have already impacted every continent.
• Developing countries require an estimated $2 trillion annually to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and manage climate breakdown, and rich nations have a moral obligation to provide this funding as they are responsible for half of global greenhouse gases.
• To fund climate efforts, the authors propose that rich nations deliver on the $100bn annual commitment from 2020, implement a windfall tax on the largest oil and gas companies, and write off loans for frontline poor nations.
